What is the Federal Income Tax Calculator?

A federal income tax calculator estimates your U.S. federal income tax, effective rate, and marginal bracket for the 2025 tax year.

How the calculation works

Your income minus the standard deduction is your taxable income. Progressive brackets are applied so each portion of income is taxed at its bracket's rate — your marginal rate is the top bracket you reach.

Example

A single filer earning $75,000 takes the $15,000 standard deduction for $60,000 taxable. The result is about $8,300 in federal tax, an effective rate near 11% and a 22% marginal bracket.

Tips

  • Your marginal rate applies only to the income within the top bracket, not all income.
  • Pre-tax contributions (401k, HSA) lower taxable income.
  • Compare the standard deduction against itemizing.

Limitations

Covers federal income tax only with the standard deduction. It excludes state taxes, credits, FICA, and itemized deductions.

Frequently asked questions

What tax bracket am I in?

Your marginal bracket is the rate applied to your last dollar of taxable income; this tool shows it based on your inputs.

Effective vs marginal rate?

Effective rate is total tax divided by income; marginal rate is the rate on your next dollar.

Does this include state taxes?

No — it estimates federal income tax only. State taxes vary widely.

What is the standard deduction?

A fixed amount that reduces taxable income; for 2025 it is $15,000 single and $30,000 married filing jointly.

Does it include Social Security and Medicare?

No — those FICA taxes are separate; use the Paycheck Calculator to include them.
